A favourite colour gives children a way into art without needing specialist vocabulary.
Look at colour and material
The museum's published description spans modern art, folk art and traditional craft. Try asking which work feels gentle or energetic, then look for the colours and materials behind that impression. Adults can choose another work and compare responses. A child's explanation may draw attention to something everyone else walked past, making different tastes part of the visit rather than something to resolve.
One theme for a short visit
You could allow around 45 minutes and follow a small theme such as colour, portraits or materials present in the galleries. Visit the children's discovery area if it is operating, then return to a work your child wants to see again. Before leaving, describe your chosen work for another family member to guess, turning a few remembered details into a shared game.

The museum publishes daily 08:00–17:00 hours. Fees changed on 10 June 2026; check the applicable rate and concession documents. Confirm lift access and children's programming, especially if a practical class is the main attraction for your family. Use drawing materials only where staff allow them.
