Sand and waves give families a simple way to step outside city routines.
From promenade to sand
The promenade and the sand offer two different ways to experience the shore. Try beginning with a walk and watching where waves reach before retreating. In a suitable spot on the beach, children could make sand shapes or compare dry and wet sand. The horizon and buildings behind the beach also offer easy landmarks to notice and describe together.
An unhurried hour
You could allow around 45–60 minutes for a walk, sand play and getting ready to leave. Choose an easy landmark to return to, especially if siblings want different activities. With a baby, the sea-view walk can be the main event while an older child spends extra time on the sand with another adult. Keep the return journey as simple as the arrival.
Follow the day's beach conditions
Follow the day's warning flags, lifeguard directions and sea conditions; stay ashore when swimming is unsuitable. Bring water, sun protection and a change of clothes. A stroller is easier on the promenade than on sand. Locate washing facilities, toilets and your pickup point before settling in.
